Enormous leap forward in the democratization of motion assessment tech
Written by Marko Dombi, Head of Product at Meloq
After years of extensive research and diligent work aimed at understanding and meeting customer needs, we recently launched a one of a kind force plate system and the first ever Meloq Device connected to an application—the Meloq System App.
We now present the EasyBase - a medical-grade, dual force plate system carefully engineered to its finest detail to meet the expectations of today's clinicians, rehabilitation specialists, sports performance experts, and athletic coaches.
Now, regardless of the size, every sports center or clinic can finally afford an accurate and reliable device to measure all the vertical forces generated from the ground up. No matter if your clientele consists of healthy individuals, athletes returning to sports, or patients recovering from hip replacement surgery, knee injury, or stroke, EasyBase can help you gain actionable insights for advanced treatment planning and design. The system comprises hardware (a pair of plates) and the Meloq System control application (tablet or smartphone), soon available on iOS and Android platforms.
Impeccable product design - diving deeper into what is visible to the naked eye!
The size of the plates is exceptionally well thought through to allow for comfortable jump and balance testing while still maintaining the appropriate weight and dimensions of a portable device for professionals on the go—for coaches who travel or clinicians who do field visits.
The EasyBase dark-blue top surface features laser-engraved marks for foot positioning, which is particularly useful for balance and jump testing. You will most certainly notice the side corner lights are entirely customizable—intensity and color can be, for example, adjusted to match your brand logo. They give EasyBase a cooler-looking appearance, which top sports performers will like. The left and right sides of the EasyBase feature two raised slots for easier lifting and carrying. The front of the plate features the EasyBase logo, and on the rear side stands the Meloq logo alongside the power button and C-type charging port.
Each plate contains four accurate, resilient, and reliable force sensors (up to 99% technical accuracy) that record the slightest and most discreet force changes applied to it (1N resolution). The system's sampling frequency is set to 400Hz, ensuring the balance between performance and data storage efficiency. This minimizes the risk of overwhelming storage or processing capacities while still maintaining reliable and accurate measurements. EasyBase captures data at intervals of 2.5 milliseconds, which is fast enough to accurately measure rapid changes in force during most biomechanical activities, such as jumping, running, and balance tasks. Human movements generally involve frequencies well below 200 Hz, with the majority of biomechanical signals falling under 100 Hz. According to the Nyquist theorem, a sampling frequency at least twice the highest frequency of interest is required to prevent aliasing. A 400 Hz frequency meets and exceeds this requirement, ensuring high-resolution data capture without compromising the system's ability to detect subtle force variations or rapid dynamic events.
EasyBase sensors send the data via Bluetooth to your control device, either a smartphone or tablet, where iOS and Android are supported. And there, the real “magic” happens! So, let's dive in!
Excellence embedded throughout - Meloq System App
The sensor data is analyzed and presented in the most visually appealing and straightforward way that not only you but, most importantly, your clients will understand. Seventeen assessments are grouped into five testing modules, covering sports performance applications and orthopedics, sports and general physiotherapy, and elderly care. The complete breakdown of the modules and tests is as follows:
- Jumps (Countermovement Jump, Squat Jump, Drop Jump, Hop Test)
- Balance (Single leg stand, Bipedal Quiet Stand, Single Leg Hop to Stabilize)
- Upper Extremity (Drop Push-up, ITY, Isometric Push Up)
- Isometric (Seated Press, Deadlift, Mid Thigh Pull, Squat)
- Functional (Sit to stand test, Bodyweight Squat)
Clear instructions and protocols are embedded as steps to starting an activity. In the pre-measurement screen, you can view the instructional video explaining how each assessment is executed. Furthermore, you can view the description of each test, the short process, as well as important considerations (such as safety precautions and essential aspects of biomechanics to consider when executing the assessment). Besides all this, we also included a set of recommended articles to consider.
Whether you are a first-time force plate user or an advanced one - we've got you covered!
The main dashboard allows an easy overview of main functions alongside access to the client's list and list of groups. You can choose your favorite activities for quick access to the ones you perform most frequently; for example, if most of your clients are recovering from an ACL injury, you can customize the dashboard to fit your needs. The main dashboard also provides a glance into the most recent Meloq news, research projects, and updates to your EasyBase, as well as a summary of the usage of the system, the number of active clients, and more.
After accessing the client's list and entering the profile of an individual athlete or patient, you will notice three primary tabs: Overview, History, and Profile. Let's explain those in detail.
Overview
The overview provides a clear view of clients' progress across tests. Here, you will find historical averages of the most relevant parameters over time. This tab answers questions such as: Is my client improving over a specific metric? How did the metric change after intervention?
History
The History tab enables access to comprehensive and detailed assessments performed on a specific date. Not to overburden you with data, we divided it into what we call “4 layers of data complexity.” The first is the Force/Time graph, which allows you to visually distinguish events that the sensors recorded. You can also interact with the graph by switching graph segments on or off and filtering only left, right, or vertical force data.
The second layer of data is the visual representation of main metrics and asymmetries in flashcards. This feature will serve you well when explaining the results to clients and for personal use, allowing you to glance at the main metrics quickly and easily without the hassle of going through a complete list of metrics tables.
Furthermore, as a third and fourth layer of data, the easy base system offers all metrics calculated and presented in drop-down tables. To take it even one step further, biomechanics specialists can export the raw sensor data and perform their calculations in the software of their choice.
Profile
The Profile tab is a key demographic regarding your client; it includes all relevant information necessary to understand and contextualize the results.
With the use of the EasyBase System, we also aimed to enhance communication between professionals as well as between them and their clients. Therefore, the Meloq System App enables client report generation, which is done in two ways. One way is for those who aim to export solely patients' progress over time, given their historical averages. The other mode of report generation is via accessing the detailed history of a specific assessment.
In addition to the EasyBase System, our main product, we launched two product accessories that supplement it in the context of jump and isometrics testing.
We designed the JumpGuard surface extension foam to ensure the safe execution of jump tests. This foam is instrumental in jump testing where front-back or lateral perturbations occur when attempting the vertical jump maximum.
We also understand that executing the isometric tests for smaller clinics or sports centers might be challenging due to the need for attachment surfaces. For this, we have designed the ISOframe, a rigid aluminum metal frame onto which the EasyBase is positioned for testing any isometric test, such as IMTP, deadlift, or belt squat.
